Friends Chris Cey, John David Davidson, and Alec Barfield founded Idahound in 2014 with a raw food recipe that Cey had originally formulated over the previous decade for his hunting dogs. Cey's research into natural pet foods began after one of his pointers, Burt, kept getting sick on long hikes. As a devoted hunter, he wanted his bird dogs to be in the best physical shape possible, which is why he ultimately switched Burt and his other pointers to a homemade raw diet. Once Chris started feeding raw, he also realized that the mountain of “scrap” meats from his elk, deer and grouse could be added to his dog food grinds. Inspired by both this ethos of local food and his dog’s dramatic turnaround, Cey and the other founders decided to spread the word and form a sustainability-focused raw dog food company.
While the owners still personally do wild game grinds each for their dogs, all of Idahound's official products are sourced from Idaho grass-fed beef, sheep and rabbit. Our line of frozen foods, raw meaty bones, and single-ingredient dehydrated treats emerge from a vertically integrated system, in which nearly everything happens at our one facility. The result is a menu of premium, small-batch products that are biologically-appropriate, ethically sourced and processed entirely by Idahound employees.
Idahound was born in the mountains. When we play outside, whether it's hiking, camping, hunting, nordic skiing, or biking, our dogs come along. Keeping them healthy and happy makes that possible, which is why for 10 years Idahound has been committed to Food As Dog Intended™!
